The 10K Apart: Responsive Edition
What will you do with just 10 kilobytes?
Once again, An Event Apart and MIX Online challenge you to show the web (and the world) what you're made of by packing the best, coolest thing you can imagine into a mere 10,240 (zipped) bytes of HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, plus any required images and ensuring it runs in multiple browsers and in multiple contexts. Think you can do that? Submit your entry to the 2011 10K Apart Challenge: Responsive Edition and you could win one of over $10K in prizes!
Last year's 10K Apart was a smash success, so we're following it up this year by upping the ante. Not only must you submit a compelling, compact web application, but it needs to be what we call “reasonably responsive” to changes of window width, color depth, and so on. Now you can't just make your entry sing once—it has to sing well in multiple venues!
To make things a little bit easier, the rules allow you to use hosted versions of jQuery and Prototype without counting against the limit. There's also a fantastic eCSStender extension available to make CSS Grid layout work in multiple browsers, not just IE10PP1. Further, you can use TypeKit to spice up your typography. Plus, as noted, your entry must be 10K when zipped.
For the Grand Prize winner: admission to any An Event Apart of their choosing and a $3,000 Visa cash card to use as they see fit. For each of the three Runners-Up, admission to An Event Apart and a $1,000 cash card. Finally, all winners, including those who earn an Honorable Mention, will receive print copies of Responsive Web Design by Ethan Marcotte and Adaptive Web Design by Aaron Gustafson.
The merits of every entry will be assessed by our panel of esteemed judges. Will you catch their eye and rise to the top? Earning a place in the 10K hall of fame won't be easy, but it will be a truly satisfying accomplishment for those who can do so. Will one of them be you? Show us what 10K can do!
