NY Sneak Preview

May 22, 2006

We can’t tell you everything that will happen at An Event Apart NYC – Two Days of Design and Code, but here’s a preview of two sessions we don’t think you’ll want to miss:

Khoi Vinh: Dawn ’til Dusk with a Design Director (Day I)

From sun-up until the stroke of midnight, Khoi Vinh will take us through a typical day inside the NYTimes.com design group. He’ll look at the management challenges, the creative hurdles, and how he balances them with extracurricular projects and the challenges of a life outside of work.

Aaron Gustafson: So you want to be a DOM Scripter (Day II)

What does it take to be a great front-end developer in today’s marketplace? This session will give you the knowledge you need to write solid scripts, manage growing libraries, and work with Ajax, while providing a great experience for your users, be they JavaScript-enabled or not.

Starting with the foundations of unobtrusive scripting, Aaron Gustafson will tackle how to blueprint and execute your scripts and leverage available libraries to make your life easier. Though the focus will be DOM Scripting, the concepts discussed apply to languages beyond JavaScript.

About the Speakers: Khoi Vinh

Khoi Vinh is the Design Director for NYTimes.com, where he leads a full design team in user experience innovation. He and his team are responsible for the visual integrity of the industry-leading news site, including design for new online features and content as The New York Times embraces the digital future.

Khoi is also the author of the popular Subtraction.com, a blog he began writing in late 2000 and updates frequently. There, he writes on design, technology and user experience matters of all kinds. His thoughtful advocacy of effective, forward-thinking design has led to wide industry recognition, including a seat on the board of directors at AIGA New York, the largest chapter of the prestigious professional association for design.

Prior to joining NYTimes.com, Khoi was a founding partner at the groundbreaking design studio Behavior LLC in New York City, where he led engagements for such clients as The Onion, ResortQuest, Smithsonian, HBO, PEAK6 and many others. He has an extensive history in consultative design services for clients in a wide range of industry verticals as well as an early career in print design, and he is a communication arts graduate of Otis School of Art & Design in Los Angeles, California.

About the Speakers: Aaron Gustafson

Developer Aaron Gustafson began teaching himself HTML in 1996, while creating a website for a magazine he was publishing. In 2000, he left the print world to focus on the web, and relocated to Connecticut, where he began pushing pixels and bits for many top companies, including Aetna, Delta Airlines, IBM and Scholastic.

In 2003, Aaron took a position in the interactive department at Cronin and Company, a regional ad agency. In less than a year, he helped grow the department’s revenue by over $1 million and set the standards (pun intended) for all web development within the agency. Under Aaron’s leadership, the sites Cronin produced for its clients garnered numerous awards for design and use of web standards. In early 2006, Aaron left Cronin to focus on building his own consultancy, Easy! Designs, LLC, and on writing.

In addition to being a member of The Web Standards Project (WaSP), Aaron sits on the Advisory Panel for WOW (formerly World Organization of Webmasters) and is a member of the Guild of Accessible Web Designers (GAWDS). He serves as Production Editor for A List Apart, is a contributing writer for Digital Web Magazine, and recently authored several chapters of the newly-updated Web Design in a Nutshell (3rd Edition, O’Reilly).

Aaron has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences including COMDEX, MacWorld and SXSW, and is frequently called on to provide web standards training in both the public and private sector. He blogs at easy-reader.net.
